About Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario

The cities of Kitchener and Waterloo — often referred to as the "Twin Cities" — are located in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo in southern Ontario, approximately 100 kilometres west of Toronto, and are known by locals jointly as "Kitchener-Waterloo". With a population of over half a million people, the Kitchener-Waterloo area is one of the fasted growing regions in southwestern Ontario. Residents of the Waterloo Region enjoy a rich variety of culture and recreational facilities, amenities, and educational institutions.

Because the Kitchener-Waterloo region is interdependent, many municipal services including police, waste management, recycling, public transit, and emergency services are managed by the regional government, with primary administrative services centred in the city of Kitchener. Kitchener-Waterloo and its surrounding areas are governed by the 16 member Waterloo Council that includes a regional chair, the mayors of all cities and townships, and additional representatives from the major cities of Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge.

A key feature of the Kitchener-Waterloo region is its high calibre post-secondary institutions, including The University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, and Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, hosting a combined 50,000 students annually including 10,000 graduate students.

Kitchener-Waterloo balances urban and suburban living with rich parkland, diverse lifestyles and a skilled labour force. Kitchener-Waterloo homes and property are among the most diverse and desired in southwestern Ontario, providing residents comfort and community.
